Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the nation on the occasion of National Technology Day, describing the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests as a landmark achievement that showcased India’s scientific capabilities and determination.

‎In a post on social media platform X, Modi remembered the contribution of Indian scientists and researchers behind the successful nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran on May 11, 1998, under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

‎Emphasising the role of technology in shaping the country’s future, Modi said innovation and scientific advancement were becoming increasingly important in driving economic growth and creating opportunities across sectors.

‎“Technology has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India. It is accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities and contributing to the nation’s growth across sectors. Our continued focus remains on empowering talent, encouraging research and creating solutions that serve both national progress and the aspirations of our people,” he added.

‎National Technology Day is observed every year on May 11 to mark Operation Shakti, the series of nuclear tests carried out in Rajasthan’s Pokhran in 1998. The day also celebrates India’s progress in science, innovation and technological development.

‎The occasion comes amid the Centre’s continued emphasis on strengthening digital infrastructure, boosting indigenous manufacturing, expanding semiconductor production, promoting artificial intelligence and supporting startups as part of its broader vision of an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” or self-reliant India.
